Dancing Bear walked out of the woods, smiled, and ran away. He may have been following them or just exploring as sixteen-year-olds tend to do. His English was poor, and Sharp said it embarrassed him. The young man that he saved earlier had just saved him right back. He was in the right place at the right time and Jake was grateful.

“Who was that? He was just a boy and it looked like you knew each other,” Milly said. She used the sleeves of her dress to dry her tears although most of them were left on Jake’s shirt as he held her.

“That was Dancing Bear, Sharp’s son. I guess you could say he was returning a favor,” Jake said. “You were telling me what you thought of while the snake was rattling right next to you. Care to continue?”

Milly blushed and cleared her throat. “I was thinking about you and how much I don’t know. If I were to die, there would be so much that I missed. That made me sad.”

Jake and Milly got back on Tar and Buttercup because it wasn’t safe to spend the night where Caleb had been. There was always a chance he might return to a place that was familiar to him.

“What is it you want to know?” Jake asked.

“You talk about the loving relationship that you had with your mother and sister. I wonder about your father?”

“My father told me a long time ago not to talk about him to anyone who didn’t already know who he was,” Jake started to explain.

“Why?” Milly asked. Low trees would snag her hair, so she ducked as she rode.

“My father had a lot of enemies; outlaws of every sort. Bank robbers, horse thieves, murderers, and worse. They hated my father because he put them in jail. You could say they put themselves in jail but very few saw it that way.”

"That's a complicated job to have in the West. People out here don't like laws much,” Milly remarked.

“I know that. Now you know more about my father, the Honorable Judge Jeb Jackson, than most people do. I seldom speak his name, so it feels strange to say the words,” Jake said.

“How did he die and what was your relationship like? You do realize that people say you inherited wealth and then squandered it away at the poker table,” Milly stated.

“My father died after a short illness. I know people talk. It’s untrue but I’ve never seen the need to correct anyone. We were comfortable with a judge’s salary but not extremely wealthy.

The night my mother was killed, our house was ransacked, and a lot was taken. I don’t know for sure because I never looked back. Can we end this conversation? Thinking too much about my past makes me sullen. I'm barely over your encounter with a snake and don't need anything more to bring me down,” Jake uttered.

“Of course, it’s fine. Maybe we will revisit the subject when you feel up to it,” Milly chirped.
